Just after Massachusetts began requiring to protect workers by having worker’s compensation insurance in 1911, the Massachusetts Employees’ Insurance Association (MEIA) was formed in 1912 as a mutual insurance company owned by its policyholders. In 1917, MEIA changed its name to Liberty Mutual Insurance Company and expanded from automobile insurance to public liability insurance. Throughout the years, Liberty Mutual continues to take steps towards growing into the insurance giant it is today. In 1936, the company became the number one writer of workers compensation insurance and in 1937, Liberty Mutual was writing insurance in all 48 states. Over the course of World War II, Liberty Mutual insured contractors who were stationed overseas and opened the country’s rehabilitation center in Boston. Liberty Mutual’s commitment to helping people stay safe continued when the company opened the Research Center for Safety and Health, which in 1957 tested car prototypes that had new safety features: headrests and seat belts. Liberty Mutual also introduced many programs to educate drivers on safety and control, namely by distributing safe driving materials to teen drivers through driving education courses and the opening of the Skid Control School in 1964.
In 1982, Liberty Mutual started looking back toward its humble beginnings, the company opened a Medical Service Center, which included a The Back School, a program designed to teach injured workers how to cope with their injury. Liberty Mutual was not quite finished dabbling in the medical world and in 1999 launched the Center for Disability Research at the Research Center for Health and Safety. Since its inception, Liberty Mutual has continually shown its desire to help workers, injured or otherwise, remain safe while on the job.
As the years passed, Liberty Mutual began to take shape into the company so many are familiar with today. In 1972, the company opened an office in London and then 1998 purchased companies in Colombia, Singapore, Hong Kong and the Philippines. Today, Liberty Mutual has held companies in Portugal, China, Chile, Brazil, United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Spain and Canada. Liberty Mutual began expanding into other markets, like asset management, under the name of Liberty Financial Companies, but those businesses were sold off in 2001 so Liberty Mutual could focus on property and casualty insurance. Liberty Mutual also focuses on philanthropy and community involvement.
In 2000, the company partnered with SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions). The company also sponsors a fire and safety educational exhibit at Disney World® and sponsors the “Coach of the Year” award.
